    By Joe Randleman, Ames Tribune,

    2024-05-27

This past week saw the Gilbert girls golf team turn in a historic performance to repeat as Class 3A state champions during the 3A state tournament on Thursday and Friday at the Pheasant Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Falls.

Roland-Story just missed repeating as 2A girls golf state champions after placing second during the 2A state meet held at the Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone. Ames also had a successful girls state golf meet in 4A, placing sixth overall at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny.

Last week also saw Nevada freshman Parker Rodgers take third individually and Gilbert finish fourth as a team during the 3A boys state golf meet on Monday at the Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames. The second day of the tournament was canceled due to inclement weather.

Ballard senior Kaitlyn Zugay took seventh in the 1A girls state singles tennis tournament in Iowa City. The Bomber doubles team of Jocie Hobbs and Ellie Volkmann placed eighth in the 1A doubles tournament.

Last week also saw defending 2A state champion Gilbert qualify for state in boys soccer and Nevada earn its 12th-consecutive state appearance in 1A girls soccer. It was also the opening week of high school softball across the state.

Here are the Ames Tribune's female and male Athlete of the Week candidates for the week of May 20-26. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.
