AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – The town of Amherst has announced the upcoming launch of Valley Green Energy, a new program designed to offer Amherst residents and businesses a more sustainable and cost-effective electrical supply.

    Power outages in Hampshire County

Valley Green Energy aims to provide the dual benefits of cleaner energy and stable pricing, thanks to the electricity supply contracts with First Point Power.

The program’s prices will be fixed until November 2026, ensuring 24 months of stable rates and protection from seasonal price spikes. Participants will automatically receive an additional 10% renewable energy content for 13.994 ¢/kWh, which is lower and more stable than Eversource’s residential supply prices (14.023 ¢/kWh starting in August). However, future savings cannot be guaranteed due to potential changes in utility prices.

“Lower prices and greener electricity…those were the goals of the program and we have achieved them in this initial offering. Much credit is due to the staff, advocates, and our superb consultants at Peregrine Energy Group for bringing this program to our communities,” said Town Manager Paul Bockelman. “We built an excellent partnership with Northampton and Pelham and are proud to bring this unique multi-community approach along with a larger market share to this initiative.”

Two additional options will be available upon request: 100% renewable energy content at 16.474 ¢/kWh or the minimum renewable content required by law at 13.594 ¢/kWh. Customers may also opt out of the program and continue with Eversource at their rates.

Approved by state regulators in April, Valley Green Energy will alter the electricity supply price on participants’ bills while local utilities will continue managing billing, power outages, and electricity delivery without interruption. Nearly 200 Massachusetts communities have similar programs, including Greenfield, Hatfield, Leverett, and Northfield.

“After years of working to create Valley Green Energy, I am very proud that this initiative will benefit every resident and business in the Town and support the Town’s efforts in meeting our climate goals,” stated Sustainability Director Stephanie Ciccarello.

Participation in Valley Green Energy will be automatic, but not mandatory. Eligible account holders will receive a notification by mail before the program launch, with the option to opt-out. Additional information will be available in early September on their website.
