AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – The Town of Amherst has answered some of the most frequently asked questions about the ongoing closure of Puffer’s Pond.

Amherst looks for solution after bacteria closes Puffer’s Pond

South Beach remains closed after a recent water test conducted by the Amherst Conservation Department found high levels of E. coli bacteria. The test conducted on the North Beach show passing results according to the Amherst WWTP laboratory.

Due to the small size of the body of water, the entire pond is closed even though one beach had passing results.

The Town is looking into long-term solutions to remedy the ongoing issues. Water quality tests are taken each Tuesday with results by noon Wednesday. To review more of the FAQs visit Amherstma.gov .

According to the Amherst Public Health Department and Conservation Department, the bacteria can be caused by various factors including large rainstorms that wash dog or bird feces into the water, farm manure runoff, and aging sanitary sewer pipes leaking sewage.

    Symptoms of E. coli

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, E. coli bacteria can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting within three days of eating or drinking something with the bacteria. In some cases, symptoms can be severe or even life-threatening.

With the humidity and high heat combined, residents are being reminded to stay hydrated, keep cool, and keep an eye out for signs of heat exhaustion in their families and pets. The Bangs Community Center and the city’s three public libraries are open for heat relief. Splash pads and pools are open at Groff Park and the Mill River recreation area, both are free to the public.
