7 News is taking a look at the numbers backing up a disturbing crime trend in Buffalo's biggest suburb.

According to new data from the Amherst Police Department, the number of cars reported stolen in the town has been climbing since 2019 and topped 300 last year.

So far this year, at least 174 vehicles have been reported stolen. That puts the town on pace to surpass last year's number and the previous six years.

“Amherst is one of the safer towns, and for this to be popping up it’s of concern,” said Scott Marafino of Amherst.

Police told 7 News that it's not just Kia's or Hyundai's being stolen and that drivers need to take precautions.

Police remind you to always lock your car, never leave it running even in your own driveway, close all windows and don't keep personal items in your vehicle.

Sarah Bald said her Jeep was stolen out of her Cheektowaga driveway last week. Her grandfather's obituary card, shoes, a car seat and other personal items were stolen. Bald's Jeep was seen the following morning on security footage during a vehicle break-in and it was being used as the getaway vehicle.

It was found damaged and missing those personal items.
