    Amherst, N.Y. (WBEN) - Amherst Police took a man into custody Tuesday morning after a long presence of officers outside and inside a home on North Bailey Avenue between Maple Road and Emerson Drive.

    Police were seen in tactical gear assembled outside of an adjacent home for quite some time. Also observed during this incident was a K-9 unit entering the home to assist in the search for the suspect.

    According to Amherst Police, officers first responded to a 9-1-1 call in that vicinity of Amherst at around 1 a.m. ET on Tuesday. Officers say when they arrived, they saw a man flee the home. Patrols and an NFTA K-9 unit searched the surrounding neighborhood, but were unable to find the man.

    Then at around 4:30 a.m. ET, that man was spotted returning to the home, entering through a rear window. After police could not contact the woman resident inside the home, the emergency response team was called in for assistance.

    Police were eventually able to have the victim and two children safely exit the home, which allowed the search for the man inside of the home to begin.

    Just before 11:30 a.m. ET, the male suspect was located hiding in the attic of the residence, and was taken into custody. Rayquell Grant of Amherst was arrested and charged with the following:

    - Criminal Contempt in the First Degree;
    - Criminal Obstruction of Breathing;
    - Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

    Shortly after Grant was taken away by police from the scene, traffic along North Bailey Avenue re-opened to the public between the entrance of Wegmans and Emerson Drive. Other residents that were kept from their homes during the incident were also allowed to go return home.

    Among the responding units to the scene on Tuesday included Amherst Police, Town of Tonawanda Police, NFTA Police and Twin City Ambulance.
