Local pastor awarded national Knights of Columbus award
(FARGO) — A pastor at St. James Basilica in Jamestown, St. Margaret Mary in Buchanan and St. Mathias in Windsor, has been recognized as the 2023-24 recipient of the Blessed Michael McGivney Medal. This award is given annually to a Knights of Columbus chaplain whose priestly zeal and exemplary service are in the finest traditions of Knights of Columbus founder Father Michael McGivney. The award was presented at the 142nd Knights of Columbus International gathering held in Quebec City, Canada on August 5th.

Williston Fire Department awarded International Accredited status
WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) - The Williston Fire Department joined elite company after receiving a new level of accreditation. The department received Accredited Agency status with the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). It’s an honor that only 320 agencies worldwide have achieved, including two others in North Dakota. Williston Fire Department Accreditation Manager Kay Metzger says the process to receive this mark started in 2018.
‘Fishing For A Cause’ Returns to Jamestown on Saturday
Anglers of all ages will be at Pioneer Point on Saturday for the annual ‘Fishing for a Cause’ fundraiser. The charity event, hosted by the El Zagal (ZAY-gull) Mystics, invites anybody who’d like to fish to arrive between 9-10:00am before the tournament starts. Children under the age of 18 will be competing to see who can catch the longest fish, with cash and prizes available to the winner. The event doesn’t end with that tournament. There will be raffles, games, kids inflatables, music, food, and local vendors at Pelican Point well past sundown. All events are free to attend.
Bismarck-Burleigh Health Department promotes helmet usage for bike riders
BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health is working on making helmets cool for kids to use. Nutrition services coordinator Katie Johnke said data supports the fact that safety measures, such as helmets, help prevent injuries and even fatalities for bike riders. She also said she knows some kids may feel embarrassed to wear one, but she encourages others to follow the norm for their own good.

Birch Named to Team Canada for 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships
North Dakota State University sophomore high jumper Arienne Birch has been selected to represent Canada at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima, Peru, on Aug. 29-31. Birch (Mississauga, Ontario) won both the Summit League indoor and outdoor titles in the high jump as a freshman in 2024, as well as qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. She cleared 5-09.75 (1.77m) for second place in the U20 high jump at the Canadian Championships in June to qualify for Team Canada.
