VESTA M. BERGLUND
Vesta Marie Berglund was born in a rural farmhouse near Slayton, Minnesota the first of three children to Arthur and Melba Carney on December 18, 1935. Vesta grew up on her parents’ family farm north of Lake Wilson, Minnesota. She attended school in Lake Wilson and was baptized at Lake Wilson First Methodist Church. She married the love of her life, Theodore Alfred Berglund, on August 30, 1952. They lived on a farm south of Slayton that was their home until 1990 where they raised their five children. As a young mother, Vesta returned to school graduating from Slayton High School in 1969. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in high school education for physics, chemistry, and mathematics from Southwest State College in Marshall, Minnesota in 1974. She put her degree to work by being a teacher at Verdi, Minnesota, and other area high schools in the following decades including Westbrook and Chandler-Lake Wilson High Schools. In 1989 she earned her master’s degree in social work and counseling from North American Baptist Seminary. She utilized her newly acquired skills at Sunshine Bible Academy in Miller, South Dakota. From there she worked at a Nebraska Native American reservation; Swea City Iowa School; and Good Samaritan Society of Algona, Iowa where she retired from in 2007. Vesta was an EMT, a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, active in Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Algona Gideons Camp.

David Martin Nielsen, 85, of Tyler, Minnesota died Tuesday Aug.27, 2024, at the United Living Community Center in Brookings. A visitation will be held Sunday Sept. 1, starting at 4 p.m. at Danebod Lutheran Church in Tyler, Minnesota, with a prayer service starting at 6 p.m.. A funeral service will be held Monday Sept. 2, at Danebod Lutheran Church starting at 11 a.m. Interment will follow the service at Danebod Cemetery in Tyler, Minnesota. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hartquist Funeral Home.
True Light Christian School welcomes in first high school class
MARSHALL — True Light Christian School welcomed in its first class of high schoolers on Tuesday, marking the start of a new era for the establishment. True Light has partnered with Grace Life Church as a joint tenant, where the church remodeled the east side of the building for additional space to house high school students. There is also a new learning commons area upon the entrance, that holds new furniture, flexible seating and natural lighting. The school started with a financial model to hold 12 students starting with freshmen, and plan to welcome in more and another grade each year.
Marshall women’s soccer falls to Saints despite strong second half defense
MARSHALL — In an effort to get their first win of the season, the Marshall Tigers girls soccer team fell short 3-0 to St. Peter on Thursday night. The Tigers stood strong defensively for a majority of the match and limited St. Peter’s goal attempts, however, left a few pockets open for the Saints to score early on.

Labor Day Gas Prices Expected to Drop to Lowest Since 2021
GasBuddy’s annual Labor Day travel forecast predicts that the average gas price will fall to $3.27 per gallon, the lowest for Labor Day since 2021. The downward trend is expected to continue, with a possibility of the national average dropping below $3 per gallon by Thanksgiving. The transition to winter-blend gas on September 16th is likely to further accelerate the decline in prices.

One driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash involving a semi truck and a pickup in Chippewa County Tuesday morning in Clara City. Memorial Services are 1:30 p.m. Friday, September 6, 2024, at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. Following a reception, interment will be at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Granite Falls, Minnesota, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior to her celebration, from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home. Worthington, Currie individuals hurt in separate crashes
A Worthington man was injured in an early Tuesday rollover crash in Watonwan County. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2017 Peterbilt Semi Truck operated by Mario Enrique Sorto Arce, 38, of Worthington was on an eastbound on-ramp to Minnesota 60 when it rolled. The crash took place at 8:18 a.m. Tuesday at milepost 84 in Madelia Township.
