They were members of First Baptist Church where Carley had served as deacon. They devoted their lives to their children and grandchildren. Carley retired from CLECO after 35 years and was employed with WST. Carley was very attentive to Ms. Ann. He was a Marine Veteran. He enjoyed watching Western Movies and reading books by Louis Lamar.

Having previously lived in New Orleans, Manuel and Thompson, who both use they/them pronouns, felt out of place in a less urban and more conservative region. Manuel, 40, and Thompson, 43, decided to create their own LGBTQ+ safe space.
