After getting stuck on a flaming cargo ship at Port Newark in New Jersey and calling mayday, two firefighters are reportedly dead.

A fire was visible at the back of the ship in a video shared on social media, with smoke rising into the sky and police radio conversation audible in the distance.

"One of the firefighters had his legs stuck, and crews were attempting to remove him from Port at End of Suez street. Crews search for multiple firefighters continues," tweeted Oliya Scootercaster of FreedomNewsTV (Washington Examiner).

The ship was docked at Corbin and Marsh streets when the fire started on the 10th floor at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday. According to officials, the fire started in several vehicles on the ship and quickly spread to the two floors above.

The majority of the fire has been extinguished, but crews are still trying to bring it completely under control, according to a public safety spokesperson.

According to officials, two firefighters went missing and requested assistance from other agencies before being located and immediately proclaimed dead.

"Our prayers go out to them, to their families, to their brothers and sisters in the fire department who fought beside them tonight and probably many fires before this one," Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said. "I saw acts of bravery and comradery today that are unparalleled. And it's very, very, very traumatic for all of us."

"Unfortunately, we have a loss. This is a tragedy, something that I, as a chief, never wanted to express," added Fire Chief Rufus Jackson (CBSNews).
