New Record Massive 800lb Alligator Caught in Mississippi

    2023-09-07

According to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks Facebook post, the record-breaking alligator had measurements of 66 inches around its belly and 46.5 inches around its tail. The agency stated that an alligator that was collected in 2017 that was 14 feet 3/4 inches long broke the previous record for the longest alligator ever caught.

Alligator sport hunting seasons were first made available in Mississippi in 2005. This year's 10-day alligator hunting season saw the distribution of more than 950 alligator hunting tags to Mississippi sportsmen through a lottery procedure. The current season started on Friday and runs through Labor Day.

The humongous alligator was caught by alligator hunters, Will Thomas, Don Woods, Tanner White and Joey Clark as pictured.

As reported by The Washington Post, alligator hunter, Thomas said, “We probably didn’t have top-of-the-line equipment because he broke everything we had. By the end of the night, I didn’t think we could catch him because our equipment was shot.”

Red Antler Processing will distribute the 340 pounds of alligator meat that the men donated to hunger shelters. The alligator's head will go to Woods, the tag holder, and the others will be "doing something special with the skin," according to Thomas.
