According to the CDC, over time, the virus that causes COVID-19 mutates frequently. New variants can occasionally spread more quickly or successfully as a result of these mutations. If that happens, the new variant might spread more widely than the existing variants that are currently in circulation.

As of December 23, 2023, the CDC estimates that between 39% and 50% of cases in the US are caused by the JN.1 variant.

The mutation BA.2.86, which the CDC has been monitoring since August, is closely linked to JN.1. There is only one alteration in the spike protein between JN.1 and BA.2.86, despite the fact that their names make them sound very different.

The fact that JN.1 persists in spreading indicates that it is either more contagious or more adept at evading our immune systems.

The United States is now experiencing an increase in COVID-19 activity. Given the pattern of COVID-19's increase, which peaked in late summer and then again around the new year, the CDC was not surprised by this increase.

The CDC currently states they don't know how much JN.1 might be affecting these increases or potential increases that could occur throughout the remainder of December, similar to those observed in prior years. The CDC states they will keep a close watch on JN.1 transmission and COVID-19 activity.

The CDC states, "An updated COVID-19 vaccine can help keep you protected against JN.1 and other variants. It’s a great time to get that vaccine if you haven’t received one this fall."
