    2023-12-31

Greensboro, North Carolina - According to WNCN, a Blue Alert was issued in North Carolina following the fatal shooting of a Greensboro police officer at a gas station in Colfax, just outside of Greensboro, and two suspects were apprehended on Saturday night.

Around 4:45 p.m., the Greensboro Police Department initially received a complaint of an incident at the Sheetz located at 3202 Sandy Ridge Road, which is just west of Greensboro.

At 5:30 p.m., Guilford County EMS confirmed with WGHP that there had been a shooting at the Sheetz, and police requested people to stay away from the area.

According to WFMY-TV, a CBS station, law enforcement was involved in the Sheetz incident. Subsequently, WXII-TV revealed that at the Sheetz, located just off Interstate 40, a Greensboro police officer was shot and died shortly before 4:05 p.m. The Greensboro police have not released an official statement.

A North Carolina Blue Alert was sent at 6:10 p.m. regarding two individuals who were driving a black Chevrolet Equinox that had escaped the Sheetz and was traveling west on I-40. According to WGHP, the alert was connected to an "assault on law enforcement."

At 7:50 p.m., approximately 100 minutes later, the Blue Alert was canceled. A few minutes prior to the cancellation, there were reports that two men had been apprehended in Winston-Salem with the Chevrolet.

Greensboro police continued to advise drivers to avoid the Sheetz on Sandy Ridge Road as of 6:51 p.m.

When a law enforcement agency concludes that a suspect poses a threat to the public and other law enforcement officers, OR when a law enforcement officer is killed or seriously injured, a Blue Alert is usually issued.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lt. Simmons with the Greensboro Police Department at (336) 373-2287 or email ncic@greensboro-nc.gov.
