North Carolina's Solar Eclipse: Timing, Coverage, and Viewing Tips

    2024-04-08

Take out your eclipse glasses! In North Carolina, interest is growing as the countdown to this unusual astronomical event begins.

The moon will pass directly in front of the sun on Monday, April 8, momentarily blocking out daylight. The path of totality, which passes through Buffalo, New York; Burlington, Vermont; Cleveland, Ohio; and Indianapolis, Indiana, is where watchers will see the sun completely obscured by the moon.

A partial eclipse will occur in North Carolina; the timing and amount of coverage will vary depending on your location in the state. Between 75.5% and 88.5% of North Carolina will be covered by the eclipse, with peak coverage occurring between 3:07 and 3:20 p.m.

Between 82% and 83% of the Piedmont Triad will be covered, with a peak expected at 3:14 p.m. From the first partial eclipse to the last, the entire event should take place between 2:00 and 4:30 p.m.

Even though the skies won't be completely clear, you should be able to watch the eclipse if you use protective eclipse glasses.

The moon will start to obscure a tiny portion of the sun at 2:00 p.m. It will be fairly warm at about 70°.

The peak coverage will occur at approximately 3:14 p.m. The temperature is predicted to reach 73° with mostly sunny skies around 3 p.m.

Anticipate partly overcast conditions around 4 p.m. today as the high temperature approaches 74.

According to Eclipse2024.org, the eclipse magnitude here in North Carolina will be highest at 88.5% near Tapoco to the west, and lowest at 75.5% near Bald Head Island to the east. Within that range, everyone in between will witness a partial eclipse.

It is predicted that the eclipse will peak in Tapoco at 3:07 p.m. and in Corolla at 3:20 p.m.
