Sheetz Among Retailers Overcharging Consumers in North Carolina

    2024-04-17

According to Fox 8, scanning errors have led to fines for several establishments throughout North Carolina.

Periodically, price-scanner systems undergo surprise inspections by the Standards Division of the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to ensure accuracy. A store schedules a follow-up examination if their overcharge error rate is greater than 2%.

The of the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Standards Division, which keeps an eye out for overcharging and price scanning problems at retail establishments, released its results for the first quarter of 2024 on Tuesday.

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler stated, “Many of the stores facing fines in the first quarter of 2024 had multiple failed inspections and a high rate of overcharging errors. Overcharges cost consumers so we remain vigilant in inspecting stores to save people money. Remember it is always a good practice to check your receipt as well as the price on the shelf to make sure you are paying the correct amount and alert managers if the prices don’t match.”

A store faces fines and is reinspected every 60 days, until their error rate is less than 2% if their follow-up assessment is unsuccessful.
