Susan Kazama returns home to lead Hawaiʻi CC
After 35 years working in higher education in Hawaiʻi—across five campuses statewide—Susan Kazama is calling Hawaiʻi Island home, again. Kazama, born and raised in Hilo and a member of the first graduating class of Waiākea High School, returned in July 2023 to serve as Hawaiʻi Community College’s interim chancellor.

Hawaiʻi-based climate projects receive $5.5M from USDA
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded over $5.5 million in Conservation Innovation Grants to Hawaiʻi-based projects. The University of Hawaiʻi received the largest grant, totaling over $2 million. The USDA awarded the money for the testing and research of the use of AI-enhanced irrigation systems at 14 farms.
Maui wildfire survivors begin moving in to Laʻikū temporary housing project in Lahaina
The first four tenants have moved into newly completed units in the La‘ikū temporary housing project along Lahainaluna Road, Gov. Josh Green, M.D., announced. Construction of this housing reflects a partnership between Governor Green’s Administration including the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) and the Hawaiʻi Department of Education (DOE), as well as the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) and the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation (HCF) Maui Strong Fund. That survivors have already moved into the first units, is another positive stride forward for community members who lost homes in the devastating historic Maui wildfires of Aug. 8, 2023.
