Summer medical program inspires future physicians
Eighty-two high school students participated in the weeklong Medical Diagnosis and Treatment Summer Program hosted by the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) in July. Since 2013, the program has offered hands-on learning for students in grades 10–12 across the state who are interested in healthcare careers.
Lahaina schools to close on Aug. 8 for anniversary of the wildfires
Public schools in the Lahaina area will be closed on Aug. 8 to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the deadly Lahaina wildfire. The state Board of Education on Thursday voted to give students and teachers the day off to take part in activities to remember and heal from the fire.
10th Annual Keiki Fishing Tournament
There was a time when Robert Kalawe Jr. got so good a hooking the biggest fish that he wasn’t allowed to enter fishing tournaments on Molokai anymore. So he decided to open his own fishing tournament. The irony, however, is that he wasn’t allowed to participate even in his own tournament – it was only for the keiki.
Saturday Market Returns to Kaunakakai
For many years, the Saturday Market in Kaunakakai was a gathering place for the community. Vendors sold produce, food, clothing, art, crafts and much more – until the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to the market in early 2020.
