Two months after announcing purchasing arrangements, Contango completes acquisition of HighGold
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Fairbanks-based mining company Contango ORE announced Wednesday that it has completed the acquisition of HighGold Mining. The deal, reportedly costing Contango about $37 million, gives the Fairbanks company control of the 21,000-acre Johnson Tract southwest of Anchorage. That tract contains the JT Deposit, HighGold’s “flagship” asset, which has gold, zinc, copper and silver deposits.

Assembly rejects proposal to vote on future of tobacco tax fund
Nearly two decades ago (2005) Sitka voters approved a tax on cigarettes and tobacco products to fund Sitka Community Hospital. The Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium purchased the city-owned hospital in 2019, but the hospital fund still exists today. At the Sitka Assembly meeting on July 9, Finance director Melissa Haley said that money is still covering some outstanding retirement liabilities from the hospital, leaving the fund in the red every year, but she expects that will soon change.

This year’s filing deadline for candidates running for Congress in Alaska was June 1, 2024. Twelve candidates are running for Alaska’s At-Large Congressional District, including two Democrats, four Republicans, two non-major party candidates, three nonpartisan candidates, and one undeclared candidate. Twenty-two candidates ran in 2022, six candidates ran in 2020, and seven ran in 2018.
Anchorage International Film Festival Introduces New Leadership Team and 2 New Categories (Exclusive)
The Anchorage International Film Festival has announced four new appointments to its leadership team along with two new competitive categories. Pat McGee and Adam Linkenhelt will be the new festival directors, with Kim Walsh as the new director of operations and Caroline Pessoa Murphy as director of development.
