    Sports Recap: Totino-Grace boys, Legacy girls golf to state; baseball teams stay alive; Andover girls lacrosse to section finals

    Spring Lake Park boys golf finished as the team runner-up, Blaine earned fourth and Coon Rapids earned ninth at the Section 5AAA Tournament at Bunker Hills May 28-29. SLP advanced three individuals in runner-up Chase Birdwell, Jake Birdwell in fourth and Austin Roloff in eighth. Ben Anderson and Jayson Zenz tied for 16th, and Lincoln Smith earned 24th for the Panthers. Blaine was led by Tyler Buffo in 18th, Nathan Lagoon in 23rd and Ethan Boortz in 24th. Coon Rapids was led by Noah Law in 24th.

    Anoka’s Jack Schmitz and Tyler Gandrud posted a one-two finish at the Section 7AAA Tournament held in Hinckley May 29-30 to advance to state. Schmitz recorded a two-day score of 142, with Gandrud four strokes back at 146. The Tornadoes finished as the team runner-up as well, as Will Cederstrand earned 23rd, Brady Hansen earned 29th, Dillon Pederson earned 34th and Braeden Thorson earned 36th. Andover’s Mason Carlson and Mike Fields, and St. Francis’ Alex Boersma tied for 40th. St. Francis’ Dylan Rodorigo and Andover’s Ben Herman tied for 45th.

    Totino-Grace earned a chance to defend its state title from a year ago with a dominant 54-stroke victory in the Section 5AA Tournament held at Pebble Creek May 30-June 3. T-G’s Peyton Savageau was the individual medalist with a two-round total of 140. Collin Ramos was the runner-up, Charlie Givens earned fifth, Ben Appelhof earned seventh, Ryan Anderson earned 12th and Vince Zurek earned 26th. Aaron Johnson led Fridley in 71st.

    Legacy Christian Academy won the Section 4A title by 28 strokes, led by individual medalist Braylon Ylkanen. Elijah Wade earned third, Ty Nelson earned eighth, Trevor Zenk earned 10th, Miles Greer earned 12th and Tanner McNamee earned 21st. PACT Charter’s Eliot Carlson became the first boys golfer in school history to advance to state with a sixth-place finish.

    Girls golf

    In its first season in Class AA, Legacy Christian Academy edged Totino-Grace by four strokes to win the Section 5AA title at Pebble Creek May 30-June 3. LCA’s Emily Brandt finished as the runner-up, Raquelle Nelson earned third, Bri Brandt earned sixth, Hailey Nelson earned eighth, Gabby Otteson earned 28th and Kate Kinghorn earned 34th. T-G’s Caylin Cantwell was the individual medalist, and Kaitlyn Burstad and Grace Raich tied for fourth place.

    In Section 7AAA at Hinckley May 29-30, Andover earned third as a team, led by runner-up individual finisher Anneka Voerding. Audrey Swenson earned ninth, Annika Summerbell earned 15th, Whitney Tollakson earned 16th, Eva King earned 17th and Ella Gorka earned 21st. Lilly Klocker earned 22nd to lead Anoka, followed closely by Lindsey Cerisier in 26th. Anoka’s Sydney Larson and St. Francis’ Makenna Sanders and Gracie Clem tied for 35th.

    In Section 5AAA, Spring Lake Park earned sixth at The Links at Northfork May 28-30. The Panthers were led by Abby Fowler in 16th, Lea Vrabec in 23rd, Grace Johnson in 27th, Harper Kliber in 31st and Brooke Goerish in 32nd. Blaine’s Olivia Toftner earned 28th, followed by Brooklyn Bauer in 41st, Melanie Michael in 42nd and Jessica McClaren in 45th. Coon Rapids’ Lily McKenzie earned 50th to lead the Cardinals.

    Baseball

    Anoka and Blaine played their way into the final four of the Section 7AAAA tournament, which was scheduled to conclude June 5-7.

    Anoka opened the playoffs with wins of 6-0 over Coon Rapids May 29 and 3-1 over Blaine May 30, before falling 3-0 to Forest Lake June 1 to drop to the elimination bracket finals. Parker Nedland threw 6 2/3 shutout innings against Coon Rapids, while Hunter Brunner had three hits, Bryaden Cherrey scored three runs and Clay Bernard drove in three. Chase Bauer allowed just one run over five innings to earn the win against Blaine, while Mason Brent homered and Brunner knocked in a pair.

    Blaine opened the playoffs with a 2-1 win over Centennial May 29, with Ethan Pettis firing a one-hitter. Ryan Burley and Carson Timm knocked in Matthew Plankers and Derek Schlomann for the Bengals’ runs. Following the loss against Anoka, the Bengals came back to defeat Duluth East 4-2 in eight innings in the elimination bracket quarterfinals to advance for a rematch against Centennial in the elimination bracket semifinals June 5. Myles Clark had two hits and drove in two, Wilson Guse had a pair of hits, and Burley earned the win with three innings of scoreless relief. The winner between Blaine and Centennial was to play Anoka for a spot in the finals against Forest Lake June 6. Andover won its playoff opener 7-6 over Cambridge-Isanti May 29, before falling 12-2 against Forest Lake May 30, and 4-3 against Centennial June 1 to close its season. Coon Rapids fell 3-0 against Centennial May 30 after its first round defeat against Anoka.

    In Section 5AAA, Totino-Grace earned a spot in the finals by outlasting Becker 1-0 in 10 innings June 1. The Eagles were scheduled to face Monticello in the championship June 5. St. Francis fell 4-3 against Big Lake in the elimination bracket quarterfinals June 1. Fridley fell 2-1 against Big Lake in the elimination bracket first round May 30.

    In Section 4A, Legacy Christian Academy was scheduled to play in the elimination bracket final versus New Life Academy June 5, for a spot in the finals versus Heritage Christian June 6.

    In Section 5AAAA, Spring Lake Park earned elimination bracket wins of 9-1 over Park Center/Columbia Heights/Maranatha May 30 and 6-0 over Maple Grove June 1, before falling 8-3 against Osseo June 4 to close its season.

    The state baseball tournament is June 13-17.

    Girls lacrosse

    Andover topped Duluth 13-7 in the Section 7A quarterfinals May 30, then upended Grand Rapids/Greenway 11-5 in the semifinals June 4 to earn a spot in the championship match against Centennial June 6. Anoka fell 12-6 against Grand Rapids/Greenway, and Spring Lake Park fell 15-5 against Chisago Lakes in the quarterfinals May 30.

    The state tournament is June 11-15.

    Boys lacrosse

    Andover won its Section 7A quarterfinal game 12-6 over Anoka May 30, before falling 15-12 against Centennial in the semifinals June 4. Against Anoka, Kaleb Weikel had five goals, Cole Jensen had three, and Rocko Gorowsky and Wyatt Carlson each had two, with 20 saves by Luke Babineau. Blaine fell 9-6 against Duluth in the quarterfinals May 30.

    Boys volleyball

    Spring Lake Park topped Andover in five sets to win the North Conference championship May 30. The state tournament is June 12-13.

    Softball

    St. Francis defeated Delano 7-0 to win the Section 5AAA championship May 30.

    Andover fell 8-3 against Forest Lake in the Section 7AAAA finals May 30.

    PWHL

    PWHL Minnesota edged PWHL Boston in five games in the inaugural PWHL championship series. PWHL Minnesota featured Andover grads Maddie Rooney and Claire Butorac, while PWHL Boston featured Blaine grad Emily Brown.
