    Sports Recap: Totino-Grace baseball, Andover girls lacrosse reach state; area golfers in hunt after day 1

    Legacy Christian Academy was in third place, just four strokes behind the leader, following the opening round of the Class A state boys golf tournament at Pebble Creek in Becker June 11. The final round of state meets for all three classes was scheduled for June 12.

    Legacy’s Tanner McNamee was tied for 15th place with a first round score of 78. Braylon Ylkanen was just a shot back in 17th place with a 79, followed by Elijah Wade (82), Trevor Zenk (85), Miles Greer (86) and Ty Nelson (92). PACT Charter’s Eliot Carlson was tied for 54th after the first round with an 86.

    Totino-Grace was in fifth place, 15 shots off the pace, after the opening round of the Class AA state boys tournament at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan. T-G’s Collin Ramos shot a 72 to go into the final round two strokes back in a tie for fourth place, followed by teammates Peyton Savageau (75), Ben Appelhof (82), Charlie Givens (83), Vince Zurek (83) and Ryan Anderson (86).

    In the Class AA girls tournament, Legacy Christian Academy was in sixth place following the opening round, 33 shots off the leader. Emily Brandt led the Lions with a first round total of 82, tied for 16th place and eight shots off the lead. Also scoring for LCA were Raquelle Nelson (87), Bri Brandt (90) and Hailey Nelson (101). Totino-Grace’s Grace Raich was tied for 16th with an 82 as well, with the Eagles’ Caylin Cantwell in 21st with an 83, and Kaitlyn Burstad in 35th with an 86.

    In the Class AAA boys tournament at Bunker Hills, Anoka’s Tyler Gandrud and Spring Lake Park’s Jake Birdwell were tied for 16th place after the opening day, shooting rounds of 74 to come in seven strokes off the leader. Spring Lake Park’s Chase Birdwell was just a shot back in 23rd place with a 75, followed by Anoka’s Jack Schmitz with a 77 and Spring Lake Park’s Austin Roloff with an 80.

    In the Class AAA girls tournament, Andover’s Anneka Voerding was tied for 34th place with a first round score of 82.

    Baseball

    A dominant stretch of pitching carried Totino-Grace to a perfect run through the Section 5AAA tournament and on to state. The Eagles only allowed three runs in four section games, the final win coming 7-1 over Monticello in the championship game held in Monticello June 5. Totino-Grace earned the No. 4 seed in the Class AAA state tournament and was scheduled to play No. 5 seed Little Falls in Chaska June 13, with the tournament running through June 17.

    Forest Lake held off a late threat to edge Anoka 2-0 in the Section 7AAAA championship game in Anoka June 6. Marshal Rassatt and Clay Bernard had two hits apiece, and Devon Luckas drew two walks. Chase Bauer held the Rangers to two runs over five innings.

    Anoka reached the finals by pulling out a 4-1 thriller against Blaine in the elimination bracket final June 5, scoring three runs in the seventh inning. Brayden Cherrey went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run, Hunter Brunner drove in a run, Mason Brent doubled, and Trevor Lang, Jackson Provoncha and Luckas each added a run. Parker Nedland tossed a five-hitter, striking out five without allowing a walk. Nick Ulrich only allowed one run over five innings for Blaine, with Ryan Burley doubling, and Ethan Pettis driving in Wilson Guse with the Bengals’ run.

    Blaine won the game prior 4-3 over Centennial to reach the elimination bracket final. Pettis held the Cougars to two runs over 5 2/3 innings to earn the win pitching. Lucas Godfrey and Carter Amelse each scored a run and drove in one, Carson Timm doubled and scored, Guse drove in a run, and Charlie Potvin added a run.

    Girls lacrosse

    Sixth-seeded Andover knocked off its third and final higher seeded team to power its way to the state tournament, toppling Centennial 9-6 in the Section 7A championship June 6.

    The Huskies dropped their state quarterfinal matchup 16-4 to second-seeded Prior Lake June 11, and were scheduled to play Elk River/Zimmerman in the consolation semifinals June 13, with state play concluding June 15.

    Boys volleyball

    Spring Lake Park and Andover qualified for the state boys volleyball tournament scheduled for June 12-13 in Shakopee, earning the third and fourth seeds, respectively.
