Milton football begins new era under familiar face
MILTON, Vt. (WCAX) - High school football season is right around the corner, with teams from all over the state opening up camp this week. On Tuesday, we caught up with a squad looking to build momentum under a first-year head coach. And it should be a very familiar face for the Yellow Jackets and their fans, as Dustin Rock takes over at Milton. The 25-year old former Castleton Spartan takes the reigns at his high school alma mater following two years as an assistant under Jim Provost and Mike Williams. Last fall, Milton got off to a good start with a dominant win over Missisquoi...then didn’t win again until mid-October. A big victory over Spaulding gave them a window, and a miraculous comeback against Mt. Abe-Vergennes would send the Jackets to the playoffs for the first time in five years. Now a number of key contributors from last year’s team have moved on, guys like Kayden Geraw and Matt Zeno. But with a number of guys on the line and targets like Sam Plouffe returing, the Jackets are looking to build themselves back into a regular playoff team. “That experience will help us,” said senior lineman Quintin Mitchell. “We’ll learn from the mistakes we made last year, and we’ll be able to use what we did in those last two games to carry us through the season.” “It has carried on into camp,” fellow senior lineman Kenyon Burke said of last year’s late momentum. “We have great energy right now. Everyone’s bonding together. It’s gonna be a great year.” “It’s a boyhood dream come true,” Rock said of taking over at Milton. “This place means a lot to me. I went on to play at Castleton and that would’ve never been possible without this place. I think we’re seeing the effects of where we left off last year, and that our tough loss in Fair Haven didn’t really knock these guys down. We’re three practices in, and the effort, the energy and the heart, it’s all there. They found this drive and this motivation. They came in this year, very, very hungry.” Milton opens its season Friday, August 30th against Chittenden County rival Colchester.
