Former Fireflies pitcher makes MLB debut
The man who closed out the first Columbia Fireflies game at Segra Park is now pitching in the big leagues. Walter Pennington’s made his MLB debut for the Kansas City Royals Friday night against the Colorado Rockies. Pennington entered the game in a jam and stranded two inherited runners while recording a pair of outs, including his first strikeout.
Priority 4-star target names South Carolina football on list of favorites
The South Carolina football program has two commitments in the class of 2026 (the number dropped from three recently when 4-star quarterback Landon Duckworth backed off of his Gamecock pledge). 4-star linebacker Rodney Colton and in-star offensive lineman Anthony Baxter are the two future Gamecocks already in the class, but USC has made moves to put themselves in solid position with multiple other prospects in the '26 cycle.

Earlier this week, three former South Carolina basketball stars (A'ja Wilson, Aliyah Boston, and Allisha Gray) were selected to participate in the 2024 WNBA All-Star Game. Summerton Town Council passes budget following mayor’s resignation
The Town of Summerton’s council passed its FY2024-2025 budget during a special meeting on June 26, just hours after Mayor Mac Bagnal resigned from his position. Town Administrator Kenneth Geathers presented the budget, which totals $2,256,788, to the council for approval. The budget maintains a taxing millage rate of 133 and incorporates a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 4.0%.

Tennessee softball lands Sage Mardjetko, South Carolina transfer pitcher
South Carolina pitcher Sage Mardjetko has committed to Tennessee softball out of the transfer portal, she announced Friday. Mardjetko entered the transfer portal after USC fired coach Beverly Smith after another regional exit. The Gamecocks made nine postseason appearances under Smith, but only reached the super regionals in 2018. Mardjetko announced her commitment on Instagram.
