Good morning everyone. We have a busy morning already as severe thunderstorms from last night are pushing through parts of Illinois. Areas such as Lincoln, IL are having a rough morning with torrential rain, frequent lightning, and damaging winds in excess of 60mph.
These storms are racing to the ESE at 55mph and will cover most central and southern Illinois over the course of the next few hours. For this reason, the National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 12pm CDT. Watches, and warnings could be extended east and south as these storms travel & eventually take advatange of the humid air and sunshine they will be bumping into.
Unfortunately, things don't end there in terms of severe weather today. We're also expecting an enhanced risk of storms in the Upper Midwest, and these could particularly nasty compared to what we are dealing with now.
Look for scattered storms to develop in North & South Dakota later this afternoon/evening, then organize into a fast moving, multi-directional line. Both scattered storms and the organized line, will be capable of very large hail, frequent lightning, torrential rain, damaging winds up to 70mph, and strong tornadoes.
This will be an issue all night, and as these storms transit the area, we could wake up to another round of severe weather in Illinois. Here is your local NYC Metro area forecast -
Look for mostly cloudy skies today and very warm & humid. We'll have scattered showers and storms around the area as low pressure transits through well north of the City. Highs a muggy mid to upper 80's.
Sunshine returns tomorrow and so do the 90's. Look for a hot & humid day with the slight chance of a PM storm.
We'll have a chance of PM storms each day from Friday through Sunday, and we are near 90 and muggy through the end of the weekend and into Monday. The first chance of a brief break could come on Tuesday with some sunshine, lower humidity, and low to mid 80's for highs.
