Heavy Showers & Thunderstorms Across Parts of West Virginia and North Carolina

Good afternoon everyone. As forecasted, we are still dealing with a lot of instability and leftover tropical energy from the events late last week. Scattered popcorn-like tropical showers and thunderstorms are developing with the help of daytime heating, and some shear in the atmosphere is helping things develop further.

Our focus is on the central southern border of Virginia and North Carolina, where clusters of heavy showers and thunderstorms have reached severe-status. Winds reaching 60mph, quarter size hail, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and radar-indicated rotation have been reported.

For this reason, the National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado warning in the areas impacted, such as Martinsville & Henry, VA. These storms are moving slowly to the north/northeast at 15mph, and we expect other areas to be impacted by this cluster of storms.

Elsewhere, we are seeing some heavy storms to the southwest of Raleigh, North Carolina, as well as to the east/northeast of Charleston, West Virginia. While not everyone will see severe weather, individual cells may be capable of locally damaging winds, large hail, frequent lightning, torrential rain, and the risk of a tornado.
