Meghan Markle was distraught after receiving a call from the palace about Prince Harry

An article in The Mirror recalls an incident in the early stages of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relationship.

While the couple was dating, Harry gifted Meghan with a gold chain with the initials, H and M.

Meghan wore the necklace out in public but it caused consternation within Buckingham Palace.

Royal authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand reveal that a palace aide reportedly phoned Meghan to suggest she refrain from wearing the necklace as it could cause a media frenzy.

After the phone call, Meghan was reported to be frustrated and distraught that the palace was blaming her for the media frenzy.

Meghan allegedly told a friend this about the incident,

'I can't win. They make out like I'm to blame for these pictures, that it looks like I'm encouraging them, that me even acknowledging the cameras may not be sending the right message.'"
