Ice cream for breakfast: Uptown Dairy in Ankeny adds new flavors, affogatos, waffles

An ice cream shop in Ankeny is scooping out new flavors and ice cream for breakfast as it celebrates a big anniversary.

Uptown Dairy in Ankeny, at 617 S.W. Third St. in the Uptown neighborhood, opened in July 2023 just ahead of the Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) rolling through town a few days later. The shop, which is just off the High Trestle bike trail, features Cedar Crest Ice Cream from eastern Wisconsin, with various flavors including Superman, Blue Moon, Mackinac Island fudge, and mango sorbet.

The shop's menu has since expanded with more flavors and new tasty treats, founder Aaron Scibona told the Des Moines Register, and just celebrated its first anniversary on July 22.

That includes a selection that has grown to 57 ice cream flavors: 32 in the dipping cabinet for scooping alongside 25 additional pints to go. The menu includes seasonal selections that swap in and out.

Late last year, Uptown Dairy also debuted affogatos, an Italian dessert of espresso poured over any flavor of ice cream, as a daily option alongside cones, shakes and floats. The shop recently highlighted on social media an affogato variety with Cookie Monster ice cream, a blend of cookies and cream and chocolate chip cookie dough.

And the shop now has a recurring morning breakfast every first Saturday of the month with homemade Belgian waffles, cannoli, coffee and affogatos. Coffalo Coffee , a roaster in West Des Moines, provides coffee to Uptown Dairy.

The next Saturday breakfast at Uptown Dairy is Aug. 3.
