Ann Arbor firefighters rescue child, two men clinging to tree in Huron River, stress importance of life jackets while on the water

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) — Three people, including a child, are safe after being rescued from the Huron River by Ann Arbor firefighters on Wednesday.

Fire officials say around 8 p.m. on July 17 they got a call reporting a child was in the river. When firefighters showed up they found the child and two men clinging to a tree in the Huron River by Broadway Park.

Officials said they were found just east of the Broadway Bridge.

Rescue crews were able to throw life jackets and rescue lines to save the child and one of the men. A crew in a boat then rescued the remaining man.

None of the three were taken to the hospital, officials said.

“We cannot stress enough the strength and speed of the Huron River's current with recent rain,” the Ann Arbor Fire Department said in a Facebook post. “PLEASE WEAR A LIFE JACKET if on the Huron River. The Huron River is NOT a controlled ‘lazy river’ like you would find at an amusement park.”

Ann Arbor police and Huron Valley Ambulance personnel also responded to the scene.

The child’s age was not disclosed and officials did not say how the trio became stranded in the river.
