ANN ARBOR (WWJ) — Ann Arbor police are asking for help identifying two young men connected to what they describe as “an alarming incident” at a Black family's home in the Foxfire subdivision on the city’s north side.

Around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, police officials say two males walked up to a home, knocking and ringing the doorbell.

While waiting for someone to answer, they could be heard saying the homeowner’s name, according to police. While at the door, one of them pushed the button on the Ring doorbell and held up a picture of an ape on his phone.

Officials said the males "persistently knocked" and activated the doorbell camera multiple times. Police officials say their actions were "deliberate" and are believed to be racially motivated.

When no one answered the door, the duo then got in a gray minivan and drove away.

Police officials say the homeowner does not know either person involved or why they would be at their home.

Ann Arbor Police Chief Andre Anderson said in a statement late Friday afternoon "many members of the Ann Arbor community have found the actions of these two to be inflammatory and cause for concern."

Ann Arbor police on Friday released photos of the people in question, who appear to be in their late teens or early 20s.

Police officials say they would “like to question these two subjects about the incident and their intentions.”

As the incident remains under investigation, authorities are asking anyone who recognizes either person to call the AAPD tip line at 734-794-6939 or email tips@a2gov.org.
