Greg McElroy Predicts Regression For National Championship Program In 2024

Last season, the national championship consisted of the Michigan Wolverines versus the Washington Huskies. After winning the national title, Jim Harbaugh left Michigan for the NFL.

Harbaugh is now with the Los Angeles Chargers, and former offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore is the head coach at Michigan. After all the changes at Michigan, Greg McElroy did not think the program would sustain its success on a recent episode of Always College Football .

He ranked Michigan as a College Football Playoff contender but not as a team that could win the championship.

"We have been pro-Michigan for the entirety of this podcast's life. The problem is, this Michigan is not the Michigan that took the field the last two years," McElroy said. "So they are in tier two, which qualifies as a College Football Playoff contender. They can make the playoff, but I'm not confident at this point that they can win the national championship."

It will be a completely different-looking Michigan in 2024. JJ McCarthy, Blake Corum, Mike Sainristil, Junior Colson, Kris Jenkins, and Zak Zinter were just some of the players drafted in April.

Donovan Edwards is still with the team and will handle the running back duties.

With McCarthy now gone, Ann Arbor has a considerable quarterback hole. Michigan did not add a quarterback through the transfer portal and has many unproven quarterbacks on the roster.

The only quarterback Michigan added from the 2024 class was former four-star prospect Jadyn Davis .

There have been 24 appearances between Alex Orji, Jayden Denegal, Davis Warren, Anthony Arnou, and Davis. Arnou and Davis have yet to see the field.

Michigan opens the season with the Fresno State Bulldogs on Aug. 31.
