Michigan’s recruiting efforts in its own backyard include prioritizing the Detroit area, with multiple 2027 in-state recruits yielding offers from the reigning national champions.

Elite Detroit (Mich.) King athlete Darryl Flemister picked up his U-M offer this past November. Since June of last year, he’s visited Ann Arbor four times, including twice for games at The Big House.

An upcoming return will commence this weekend when Flemister takes in the barbecue festivities.

“I’m just really looking forward to bonding with the coaches, some of the recruits in my class,” Flemister told The Wolverine earlier this summer. “I just want to have a good time.”

Flemister’s association with Sound Mind Sound Body (SMSB), a Detroit-based 7v7 and recruiting exposure service, has led to him and many others involved with the organization yielding friendships with several rostered Michigan players.

Those who developed with SMSB before enrolling at Michigan still remember their roots fondly and celebrate their role as mentors to the up-and-coming stars.

“I’m getting comfortable with (the program) because I have a lot of people that go to Michigan that I know, like Will Johnson , Jacob (Oden) ,” Flemister said. “They come (to) me when I go up there. They treat me like I’m family.”

Flemister’s most recent U-M visit occurred this past March when he watched spring camp and met with the new coaches.

“It was really good,” Flemister said. “We got to talk about football. We talked about academics, all that.”

One of the assistants who stayed on from last season to be a part of head coach Sherrone Moore ‘s staff is wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy , the primary recruiter for Detroit and its suburbs. Flemister built a foundation with Bellamy on the practice trip four months ago.

“He cares about his players,” Flemister said. “He was telling me he makes sure his players are doing good in class instead of just on the field.

“He was saying I’m a good athlete, I have good grades, I have big potential to play in college and in the NFL. Just have to keep a level head, keep my head down, work. It felt really good (for) a national champion coach to tell me that.”

The Wolverines are the early favorite for Flemister on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine.

At 6-foot-0, 180 pounds, Flemister is not yet listed on the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four primary recruiting media services.

Along with Michigan, he holds notable offers from Ole Miss, Kentucky, Maryland, Auburn, Tennessee, Michigan State, Oregon, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, among others.
