Michigan football scholarship chart heading into 2024 season

Michigan Wolverines football has its roster set at the beginning of fall camp, with the team’s preparations for the 2024 season underway. There’s always a possibility for additions to the team, but the roster is more or less locked in for the campaign.

Michigan bulked up its roster, adding competition and depth, during the spring and summer. The Wolverines brought in seven transfers following the conclusion of spring practices: graduate wide receiver C.J. Charleston ( Youngstown State ), graduate cornerback Aamir Hall ( Albany ), graduate cornerback Ricky Johnson ( UNLV ), junior safety Jaden Mangham ( Michigan State ), junior wide receiver Amorion Walker ( Mississippi ), graduate safety Wesley Walker ( Louisville ) and junior kicker Dominic Zvada ( Arkansas State ). Amorion Walker, it’s worth noting, was on scholarship at Michigan the prior two seasons, spent a semester at Ole Miss this spring and transferred back.

As of Aug. 4, 2024, we project that Michigan is at 98 scholarships. There’s currently a limit of 85 scholarships (that number, which will actually be the roster cap, increases to 105 ahead of the 2025 season due to the new NCAA enforcement model). However, Michigan isn’t necessarily above the limit. It’s important to note that the program does not update the scholarship status of any player after they sign their letters of intent, so this is indeed a projection, as we’re counting each athlete that was on scholarship at one point.

For example, former Michigan defensive tackle Cam Goode , who was on scholarship in 2022, moved to walk-on status last season, saying, “I switched to NIL . It was pretty much, ‘We’re taking your scholarship, and we’re giving it to somebody that doesn’t have a scholarship in a younger class.’”

Here’s a look at the projected Michigan football scholarship chart:

    Key

    * — Redshirted
^ — Former Michigan walk-on now on scholarship (it should also be noted, however, that walk-on scholarships are given on a semester-to-semester basis, and aren’t necessarily held throughout an entire career).
    % — Seventh-year senior

Here are Michigan’s scholarship numbers by position:
    QB: 5
    RB: 7
    WR: 9
    TE: 7
    OT: 9
    OG: 5
    C: 3
    EDGE: 11
    DT: 12
    LB: 8
    CB: 8
    S: 10
    ST: 4

Michigan began fall camp July 31, giving it exactly a month to prepare for the Aug. 31 opener against Fresno State. The Wolverines saw 13 players from last year’s team get drafted to the NFL this past spring, setting a program record, but they believe they have the talent to minimize a drop-off and compete to defend their three-straight Big Ten titles and 2023 national championship.
