LSU has inside track to flip elite 5-star recruit who decommitted from Michigan amidst scandal

The Michigan Wolverines had a rough Sunday, first learning of the NCAA's request for a response around the Connor Stalions saga and then seeing speedster Phillip Wright decommit from the program. The 2025 recruit is one of the fastest verified runners in the class, and now LSU and Georgia appear ready to battle to flip Wright.

The Destrehan, Louisiana, native is ranked as a 3-star prospect, but the 5-foot-11, 175-pounder is an undeniable track star. His speed would've been welcomed at Michigan amidst their roster rebuild under head coach Sherrone Moore.

Wright has received offers from Georgia, LSU, and numerous other top Power Four schools. Despite his commitment to the Wolverines in July 2024, he has remained open to interest from other teams, including the Tigers.

Wright is regarded as a solid three-star prospect (88) and ranks as the country's 65th wide receiver, according to 247sports. This ranking might understate the impact of his remarkable 10.46 100-meter dash speed, which poses a constant threat for him to score from any point on the field.

He feels that his exceptional track abilities have led some to underestimate his football talents, especially as a receiver.

"There have been a few people that call me a 'track guy,'" Wright told 247Sports earlier this summer. "But my track trainer says I'm a football player that's just blessed with abilities to run track. That's what he tells me, and I feel like he's right."

Given LSU's nearby status, I spoke to a source who believes the Tigers are in pole position for Wright despite their continued interest in higher-ranked recruits. Georgia was also a finalist for Wright only a month ago, so it'd make sense for the Bulldogs to pick up where they left off.

Previous industry projections had the Wolverines as either a toss-up or a slight favorite to land Wright's initial commitment. LSU was already viewed as the top competition for him. Will he stay local in Louisiana? Or could we see Baylor, Miami, or Ole Miss get involved?
