    2024-05-24

Nova Maldives, an eco-conscious island resort committed to preserving the ocean's delicate ecosystem, has announced a special lineup of activities to celebrate World Ocean Day, June 8. This event will be led by one of the Maldives’ few female diving instructors, a visionary PADI Professional who is dedicated to female empowerment, conservation, and environmental awareness.

Located on its own private island in the South Ari Atoll, Nova offers an eco-friendly retreat where guests can reconnect with themselves, others, and nature in a luxurious yet sustainable setting. The resort is surrounded by a vibrant marine ecosystem and is renowned for providing unique and awe-inspiring marine experiences, including opportunities to observe whale sharks and manta rays in their natural habitats from over 30 spotting points. Nova's commitment to sustainability is further highlighted through its collaboration with the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme, where guests can learn about marine research and contribute to coral growth through a coral nursery initiative.

Nova Maldives will host Afaa Abdulla, a remarkable 22-year-old female diving instructor and passionate conservationist, to co-lead a series of activities during World Ocean Day. Trained under Zoona Naseem, the Maldives' first female PADI Course Director, Afaa is from a northern Maldivian island and has a deep connection to the ocean that inspired her to become a diving instructor. She aims to share her love for the ocean with travellers who are captivated by the sea and eager to explore its depths and beauty.

From June 6th to June 9th, guests can partake in a variety of thematic briefings and presentations led by Nova’s marine biologist. These sessions will cover topics such as whale shark and manta ray biology, coral bleaching and conservation, and safe snorkelling practices. The daily briefings will be followed by guided snorkelling and reef cleaning excursions, allowing guests to observe whale sharks and corals up close. Experienced divers will have the opportunity to explore the world-class dive sites of the South Ari Atoll independently.
