Film at Lincoln Center Announces 'Carnal Knowledge: The Films of Catherine Breillat,' June 21–27
2024-05-30
Film at Lincoln Center (FLC) is getting set for "Carnal Knowledge: The Films of Catherine Breillat," a complete retrospective of the works of acclaimed French director Catherine Breillat. This extensive program, running from June 21–27, is presented in anticipation of the theatrical release of Breillat's latest film, Last Summer, which opens on June 28. Breillat will be in attendance for select screenings, including an advance sneak preview of Last Summer on June 26, followed by a Q&A session.
Catherine Breillat is renowned for her daring exploration of female sexuality and the complex politics of sex. An accomplished novelist, screenwriter, and actress, Breillat has carved a distinct niche in French cinema as a fearless provocateur. Her work consistently interrogates the intimate and often controversial themes of desire and power dynamics, making her a singular voice in the world of film. Spanning nearly five decades, Breillat's films boldly address the female experience in a world dominated by insecure and possessive men, through various genres and stylistic approaches.
The retrospective, organized by Florence Almozini and Dan Sullivan, features many of Breillat's most significant works, each a testament to her uncompromising vision and narrative prowess.
