Call for Black Women Artists from NYC: Join 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' Portrait Project

    2024-06-06

In an inspiring celebration of Juneteenth and Black Music Month, Black women artists from Harlem and surrounding neighborhoods are invited to participate in the groundbreaking portrait project, "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face." This collaboration between The Children’s Art Carnival (CAC) and The Colored Girls Museum (TCGM) seeks to capture the intersection of triumph and trauma in Black girlhood through powerful visual art.

"First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a unique portrait series that aims to transform the often-overlooked experiences of Black girls into celebrated visual monuments. This initiative, supported by the Knight Foundation, is more than an art project; it’s a statement of empowerment and resilience. It offers a space to see Black girls in their girlhood as only the participating artists can portray, elevating their experiences into powerful visual stories.

The project invites Black women artists from Harlem and surrounding neighborhoods such as Inwood, Washington Heights, and the South Bronx. Artists are to select a young Black girl from their neighborhood, aged 7-18, to sit for a commissioned portrait. Selection criteria will include the artist’s portfolio, their understanding of the project’s theme, and their ability to capture the essence of the young Black girl in their work.

    • Submission Deadline: June 28, 2024
    • Artist Selection Announcement: August 2024
    • Portrait Completion Deadline: Nov. 9
