Grammy-nominated jazz saxophonist Godwin Louis is set to captivate audiences in Newark on August 21, as part of the WBGO After Work Jazz Series. Louis will celebrate the release of his highly anticipated sophomore album, Psalms and Proverbs, with two performances at the Newark Public Library. The concerts, supported by Audible and the Newark Public Library, will take place at 4:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.

Psalms and Proverbs, set for global release on August 23 through Blue Room Music, explores religious traditions from around the world through a jazz lens. Louis’s latest work promises a rich, immersive experience into the spiritual and cultural depths of jazz, according to a press release.

Born in Harlem to Haitian parents and raised in Port-au-Prince and Bridgeport, Connecticut, Louis has a storied career. He emerged as a saxophone prodigy and quickly ascended to international stages. His impressive resume includes collaborations with jazz legends such as Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Wynton Marsalis, as well as diverse artists like Patti LaBelle and Madonna.

In addition to his performance career, Louis serves as an assistant professor at Berklee College of Music. He is also renowned for his humanitarian efforts, advancing music education in Haiti and Africa as a music ambassador.
