Atlantic Theater Company Announces Exciting 2024-2025 Season: A Showcase of World Premiere Plays

    2024-08-17

New York City's Atlantic Theater Company, under the leadership of Artistic Director Neil Pepe and Managing Director Jeffory Lawson, has unveiled its highly anticipated 2024-2025 season, featuring an impressive lineup of five world premiere plays. This season promises to be a captivating journey through various genres, styles, and voices, showcasing the talents of renowned playwrights Ethan Coen, NSangou Njikam, Mona Pirnot, Abby Rosebrock, and Eliya Smith. The productions will be staged at the Linda Gross Theater and Atlantic Stage 2, offering audiences a diverse range of theatrical experiences, according to a press release.

Kicking off the season is NSangou Njikam’s "A Freeky Introduction," a dynamic and engaging piece that combines poetry, ministry, and magic. Directed by Dennis A. Allen II and featuring the energetic beats of DJ Monday Blue, this play invites the audience to embrace their inner "Freek" and embark on a journey toward freedom and self-discovery.

Next, audiences will be transported to Hurt, Virginia, with Eliya Smith’s "Grief Camp." Directed by the Tony Award-nominated Les Waters, this poignant play explores loss and adolescence in a remote cabin where campers gather each year. Through shifting shadows and home-cooked meals, "Grief Camp" delves into the heart of grief and the complexities of growing up.

Mona Pirnot’s "I’m Assuming You Know David Greenspan" is a unique and humorous exploration of the life of a playwright. Starring the eponymous David Greenspan and directed by Ken Rus Schmoll, this play offers a comedic yet dramatic look at the challenges of making a living in the world of theater. Greenspan, at 68, plays four millennial women, adding a layer of complexity and wit to this world premiere.

Ethan Coen, known for his sharp wit and dark humor, presents "Let’s Love!," a trio of one-act plays that explore the messy, confusing, and often miserable nature of love. Directed by Neil Pepe, this comedy delves into the human experience of love with all its challenges, absurdities, and occasional moments of clarity.

The season concludes with Abby Rosebrock’s "Lowcountry," a dark romantic comedy that navigates the digital age and the carceral state. Directed by Jo Bonney, the play follows Tally, an actress returning to her rural hometown, as she navigates a new romance with a disgraced former teacher. "Lowcountry" promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of love, redemption, and societal constraints.
