Film enthusiasts and curious New Yorkers will get a rare glimpse into the world of movie-making at this year’s New York on Location event, a free, family-friendly outdoor celebration happening on September 15, from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. in Astoria, Queens.

The event, hosted by the Museum of the Moving Image, Theatrical Teamsters Local 817, I.A.T.S.E. Local 52, and Kaufman Astoria Studios, offers a unique, hands-on experience that showcases the real-life logistics of film and TV production in New York.

Participants will have the opportunity to step inside 18 working movie trailers and trucks directly from active productions, including star dressing rooms, prop and camera trucks, special effects rigs, and hair and makeup stations. Movie professionals will be on hand to discuss their roles and give visitors an insider's view of the filmmaking process.

    Event Highlights:

    • Special Effects demos, including simulated rain and snow
    • Makeup Artists creating everything from glam looks to realistic cuts and bruises
    • Star Dressing Rooms and “Lucy and Desi” washrooms (a.k.a. honeywagons)
    • Camera Car rigged for filming in moving vehicles
    • Food Trucks on-site and Mon Amour serving in the Museum’s café and courtyard

Event-goers will also hear remarks from Pat Kaufman, Commissioner of the NYC Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment, alongside other special guests.

Peek Behind the Curtain at the Museum of the Moving Image

While enjoying the street fair, visitors can also tour the Museum of the Moving Image’s core exhibition, Behind the Screen, which dives deep into the creative process behind film and TV production. For the day, the Museum is offering 20% off general admission and free access to the first-floor galleries and courtyard.

Museum Executive Director Aziz Isham said in a press release, "New York on Location is a celebration of New York City’s role at the very heart of the entertainment industry, and it’s a reminder that it’s people—and our unions—that contribute to the magic we see on screen. It's a great day to explore the Museum, with free VR experiences and lowered admission to our galleries where you can learn more about the crafts involved in making moving images.”

The Unseen Heroes of the Film Industry

“For over 100 years, our historic studios have helped provide a venue for creators to craft the magic we see on screen," said Hal Rosenbluth, president of Kaufman Astoria Studios, in a press release. "New York on Location gives families across the city a peek behind the curtain to appreciate the work that goes into their favorite films and shows.”
