The Board of Trustees of The Frick Collection announced the appointment of Axel Rüger as the museum’s next Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Director, effective spring 2025. In his new role, Rüger will guide The Frick through a pivotal period, especially following the largest renovation in the museum’s history.

"The Frick is a uniquely special place, and there is not another museum in the world quite like it," Rüger expressed in a press release from Frick. He has long admired the museum and sees this opportunity as "an irresistible proposition" to engage both loyal visitors and new audiences.

The appointment concludes a thorough global search initiated in spring 2024 after the retirement announcement of Ian Wardropper, who led The Frick for fourteen impactful years. Under Wardropper’s direction, the museum experienced significant growth, including a major renovation and acclaimed exhibitions.

Rüger is well-regarded for his strategic vision and audience engagement. During his tenure at the Royal Academy, he successfully navigated the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, exceeding fundraising goals and curating notable exhibitions. He previously held leadership roles at the Van Gogh Museum, where he attracted millions of visitors and implemented successful strategic plans.

With a robust background in curatorial practices, Rüger’s expertise includes overseeing collections and exhibitions that enrich the cultural landscape. He aims to build on The Frick's rich history while expanding its reach and impact.

The Frick Collection, located in a historic mansion on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, is known for its stunning collection of Old Master paintings and decorative arts. Rüger’s appointment is seen as a transformative step as the museum prepares to reopen its doors in early 2025.

Rüger's extensive credentials and proven leadership in the museum sector make him an ideal candidate to steer The Frick into a new era, fostering growth and deepening connections with the community. The Board of Trustees is confident that his vision will enhance the museum’s esteemed legacy.
