ANNAPOLIS — News organizations across the region were recognized with awards for work they produced over the past year. The editorial and marketing staff of APG Media of Chesapeake garnered 19 awards in 16 categories.

The awards were announced during the Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association’s annual ceremony Friday, May 3, in Annapolis. The association represents over 100 member news media organizations in the region. The contest recognizes the best print and online work completed in 2023.

The contest, governed by the MDDC’s editorial and advertising committees, admitted over 1,550 entries among 86 categories. There are seven divisions in the contest, which group member publications into daily and non-daily print and online-only categories, then further group them by circulation. The entries were judged by news media professionals at the New Jersey Press Association.

The Star Democrat took home a total of nine awards in the Division C category.

Reporter Maggie Trovato took home first place in the Business Reporting category. Reporter Connie Connolly won the top prize for the Series category. Reporter Tom McCall came in second place in the Breaking News Photo and reporter Natalie Jones took home second place in the Breaking News category.

Designer Meredith Moore took home the top prizes in the Advertising-driven Special Section and News-driven Special Section categories. The Star Democrat’s marketing team took home the first place in the Special Niche Website category, and the newspaper’s marketing, advertising and editorial teams were recognized with second place wins in the Advertising-driven Special Publication and News-driven Special Section categories.

The Star Democrat also took home this year’s Best Move award, a top award given across all divisions, for last year’s Women to Watch Summer Speaker Series. The award highlights the most important thing MDDC member organizations did in 2023.

APG Chesapeake’s other newspapers also took home prizes.

In Division C, the Cecil Whig’s Matt Hubbard came in first place in the Education Reporting and Medical/Science Reporting categories. Whig Sports Editor Patrick LaPorte took home second place in the Sports Story category, and Whig reporter Carl Hamilton came second in the Feature Story: Profile category.

In Division E, Southern Maryland News’ Mike Reid took home second place in both the Series and Feature Story: Profile categories.

In Division F, The Newark Post’s editor, Josh Shannon, won first place in the Continuing Coverage category and second place in the Religion Reporting and General Website of Excellence categories.

“I am proud of the work our staff has done over the past year,” APG Chesapeake Executive Editor Jim Johnson said. “The awards are a nice culmination to the year, but we have great stories, photos and advertisements in our newspapers and on our websites every day. The real winners are our readers.”
