Archaeology of Mobile Bay
“The Archaeology of Mobile Bay” will be the topic of the Clarke County Historical Society’s monthly program on Sunday beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Grove Hill City Hall. For the past few years, archaeologists from the University of South Alabama have been excavating along the waterfront near downtown Mobile as part of the I-10 Mobile River Bridge Archaeological Project. Their work has uncovered 2,000 years of Mobile Bay history, in approximately 15 sites, ranging from Woodland-period Native American artifacts to 18th century colonial and up to communities of the 1960s.

Mary Appleton Haas O’Melia
Mary Appleton “Appie” Haas O’Melia passed away peacefully on July 6, 2024 surrounded by her family. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother who was a native Mobilian and longtime resident of Grove Hill. Appie was greatly loved and is survived by her adoring husband of 60 years, Thomas Harrigan O’Melia; her children, Olivia O’Melia Iturbe (Trey), Appleton O’Melia Weston (Jeff) and Virginia O’Melia Cook (Miles); and eight grandchildren, Thomas Fellows Iturbe, Elliott Augustus Iturbe, Mary Appleton Weston, John Fuller Weston III, Harrigan Salisbury Weston, Virginia O’Melia Macpherson, John Ritchie Macpherson IV and Elizabeth Blacksher Macpherson. She is also survived by her sister, Blakely Haas Davis.
