Hochul Announces NY State has Thousands of Jobs Available to Eligible Migrants

    2023-10-02

Kathy Hochul, the governor of New York, has declared that the state Labor Department is offering thousands of jobs for qualified asylum applicants. Over 350 firms have 18,000 open positions that they are prepared to fill with immigrants who are eiligible for employent, according to the New York State Department of Labor.

The employment will be open to Venezuelans who can now work because their Temporary Protective Status (TPS) has been extended. An asylum seeker can leave the shelter system and be classified as an immigrant who pays taxes and lives independently once they are able to work and receive a paycheck, according to a state official.

"Migrants and asylum seekers came here to work -- so let's put them to work," Governor Hochul said. "Right now, we have a migrant crisis and a workforce crisis. By connecting work-eligible individuals with jobs and opportunity in New York, we can solve them both and secure a brighter future for all New Yorkers."

Thousands of Venezuelans who arrived in the country last week were given temporary legal status by President Joe Biden. The governor and Mayor of New York City Eric Adams described the action as a game changer.

According to officials, nearly 40% of the migrants currently present in New York come from Venezuela. All Venezuelans who entered the country prior to July 31 of this year are eligible for the temporary protected status.Additionally, it extends TPS for those Venezuelans who came before March 2021.
