Mayor Adams Issues Executive Order Limiting Migrant Bus Arrival Time in NYC

    2023-12-28

Due to the increasing number of asylum seekers arriving in their cities via bus and plane at any hour of the day or night, the mayors of Chicago, New York, and Denver have made renewed requests for additional federal assistance and coordination with Texas.

The petitions from the mayors come as American towns are finding it difficult to handle the growing number of migrants being transported from Texas and other states. Over 80,000 migrants have been transferred to Democratic-led communities by Republican Governor Greg Abbott's busing program since last year. His administration has now increased the use of chartered aircraft to transport migrants.

Abbott and the endeavor came under heavy fire from the mayors, who said that busses were showing up at all hours and outside of approved drop-off locations without any indication of who was on board.

"We cannot allow buses with people needing our help to arrive without warning at any hour of day and night," New York City Mayor Eric Adams said at a virtual news conference with the other mayors. "This not only prevents us from providing assistance in an orderly way, it puts those who have already suffered in so much in danger."

In addition to announcing an executive order on Wednesday mandating that buses arrive at a single drop-off location only between 8:30 a.m. and noon on weekdays, Adams warned that New York City would implement measures akin to those in Chicago or risk fines, legal action, or having their buses seized. Similar regulations apply to drop-offs at specific hours on weekdays in Denver.

In Manhattan, buses are now required to discharge passengers at the loading zone located on West 41st Street between 8th and 9th Avenues, according to Mayor Adams' office. Additionally, 32 hours notice must be given by chartered buses before they enter the city.

To deter individuals from visiting the city, New York City has provided one-way tickets for migrants to leave the city.

A spokesperson for Abbott's office said the governor will keep "taking historic action" until Biden's administration secures the border.
