Anniston Police Department Youth Explorer Program Celebrates Graduation

Anniston, AL – The Anniston Police Department (APD) held a heartfelt graduation ceremony on Friday, July 26, to celebrate the completion of its Youth Explorer Program (YES). The event, held at the Anniston Community Center, marked the end of an intensive eight-week program designed to introduce local high school students to the field of law enforcement.

Chief Nick Bowels addressed the graduates and attendees, reflecting on the challenges of recruiting young people into law enforcement. He noted the difficulties in attracting new recruits due to the pressures and negative perceptions associated with the profession. “In today’s world, social media and other pressures can dissuade young people from pursuing a career in law enforcement,” Chief Bowels said. “The YES program is our way of combating this by engaging with youth early and showing them the realities and rewards of a career in policing.”

The ceremony included a poignant speech that emphasized perseverance and overcoming challenges, illustrated by the story of Benaiah, a biblical warrior known for his bravery. The speech underscored key values for the graduates, including facing fears, seeking wise counsel, and making a positive impact on others.

Lieutenant Lloyd, who played a crucial role in establishing the YES program, shared insights into its development. He explained that the program was inspired by a need to connect with youth and offer them a clear understanding of the law enforcement profession. “Our goal is to provide local students with a comprehensive introduction to what it means to work in law enforcement,” Lieutenant Lloyd said. “We hope that by doing so, we can inspire a new generation of officers.”

The YES program offers an immersive experience, giving students hands-on exposure to various aspects of police work. Through this initiative, the APD aims to build stronger community ties and foster a deeper understanding of the role of law enforcement.

In addition to the graduation ceremony, Chief Bowels and other APD members expressed their gratitude to the families of the graduates. They highlighted the importance of community support in shaping future law enforcement professionals.
