Repeating as champions of the Auburn Boys League were the Auburn Journal players in this photo from the July 26, 1956, edition of the Journal. The squad won 17 games and lost one in league play, their only setback being the opening game of the season. The champs are, back row from left to right, Ron Lipsmeyer, Donald Banderas, John Larimer, Fred Sunada, Butch Enkoji, Rex Lewis and Jim Ferguson. Front row: Phil Olrich, Mike Beggs, Bob Donohue, Jim Stewart, John Blackburn and Bob Sunada. Dale Retallack was not present. Banderas, a 12-year-old and senior member of the team, is completing his fifth year of Little League or Boys League baseball. The infield captain has never missed a practice or game in five years. Enkoji, also a graduating 12-year-old, is completing his fourth season with the team.
2 killed after plane that departed from Sacramento McClellan Airport crashes near Eureka
HUMBOLDT COUNTY – Authorities say two people have died after a small plane crash near the Kneeland Airport late Tuesday morning. The FAA says the single-engine Cessna 206 crashed around 11:30 a.m. after departing from Sacramento McClellan Airport. Only two people were on board the plane when it crashed; the FAA says; both of those people have died. Cal Fire officials have confirmed that the two people killed were contractors with Amentum Aviation. Exactly what led up to the crash is under investigation by both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.Kneeland Airport is located near the Humboldt County community of Kneeland, just east of Eureka.
