UTEP Volleyball Excels Academically with AVCA Team Award Win in 2024
UTEP Volleyball has been honored with the 2024 AVCA Team Academic Award for the sixth time, recognizing their classroom excellence with a GPA of 3.51 over the academic year. 17 athletes made it to the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll with a GPA of at least 3.0, and eight received CUSA Commissioner's Academic Medals for achieving a GPA of 3.75. Three students were selected to the CUSA All-Academic Team and named CSC Academic All-District.

PUEBLO OF LAGUNA, N.M. – In an area the Pueblo of Laguna has identified as the K’awaika Center Master Plan, which promotes specific concerted revitalization activities, the newly developed East Paraje Apartments will be home to 20 families. Hosted by the Laguna Housing Development and Management Enterprise, New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority (MFA) officials attended the grand opening ceremony for the apartments on July 17.

Las Cruces police seek volunteers for Victims Advocate Team
The Las Cruces Police Department has put out a call for volunteers for the Victims Advocate Team, part of the LCPD’s Victims Assistance Unit. The Victims Advocate Team works with professional advocates, police officers and detectives to assist victims of crime, the department explained in a news release. Those interested in a law enforcement career, victims’ advocacy or experience related to criminal justice or social work were encouraged to apply.

New Principal Adds 90% Attendance Policy
At the meeting of the Jal School Board this past Monday, during the principal’s and superintendent’s reports, Jal High School Principal Buddy Little noted an addition to the student handbook concerning attendance. Last year, according to Little, there was no requirement that students attend a certain number of days of school in order to get credit. Previous to this coming school year (2024-2025) the only policy was that students had 10 days to make up missed assignments, but Little also noted that it was up to the teacher how strict they wanted to enforce this rule, and that it was never consistently upheld by the teachers. He said, “This one has a little more bite to it.”
Flash flood warning includes Rio Rancho
RIO RANCHO, N.M. — A flash flood warning is issued for south central Sandoval County. The area does include Rio Rancho. Flash flooding is possible in small creeks and streams, on some roadways and low-lying areas, according to National Weather Service. The warning is set to continue until 9:45 p.m. Thursday, July 18.
