ANTIGO — On June 23, four beginners officially became square dancers and members of Antigo Gateway Squares, Inc.

Caller Michael Streby of Wausau led the classes, which were completed by Cliff Hoffmeister, Mary Jo Kawalski, Sue Duchan and Faith Hunt at the Langlade County Senior Center, according to Rose Marie Kerner, the president of Antigo Gateway Squares.

“It’s not the number of classes — it’s the number of calls,” Kerner said of how the four became official members. “They need to know what they are and how to do them. I think there’s about 50 calls.”

Kerner encouraged visitors to attend the group’s regular dances, which are held the second and fourth Sundays of the month, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The group will also put on demo dances Saturday, July 27 at the fair from 1-2 p.m. and then again from 3-4 p.m.

“It’s fun — that’s why we do it. We want to have fun and we get together with our friends. It’s good for you mentally, emotionally, physically, socially, and spiritually. You’re up there meeting people and having fun with them. A good caller can get you dancing in 10 minutes,” she laughed. “Square dancing adds life to your years and years to your life.”
