Fire causes significant damage to home
ANTIGO — A 9th Avenue home sustained considerable damage during a house fire late Monday night. ANTIGO — At a Public Works Committee Meeting Wednesday night, city officials mulled adding stop signs or other signals at both the Dorr and Edison St. intersections of 5th Avenue to slow traffic along the street. Ruby Szitta of Antigo celebrates 95th birthday
Mrs. Ruby (Spear) Szitta celebrated her 95th birthday recently at an open house hosted by her family. The party was held at Chocadoodledoo’s in Antigo with many relatives and friends in attendance, including Ruby’s sister, Jean Clay, who celebrated her 90th birthday last summer. Mrs. Szitta, a life-long resident of Langlade County, graduated from the Langlade County Teachers College in 1948. After beginning her career by teaching in several one-room schools, Ruby continued to work as a teacher and instructional assistant within the Antigo school district until retiring in 1993. Mrs. Szitta also served as Clerk of Summit Township from 1969 to 1999, worked at almost every election held between 1966 and 2020, and was also a dedicated 4-H leader of the Summit Satellites 4-H Club. Ruby attends St. John’s Catholic Church in Bloomville, where she is a longtime member.
Library official files complaint against county board
ANTIGO — Antigo Public Library Director Ada Demlow said she filed a complaint with the Langlade County District Attorney’s office Friday alleging the County Board violated open meetings law. The complaint charges the County Board with breaking an open meetings statute prohibiting changes to a meeting agenda within 24 hours of the meeting itself without just cause. ANTIGO — A local man was taken into custody and charged with a slew of felonies Wednesday related to embezzling over $300,000 while serving as treasurer both for the Town of Ackley Board and Langlade County Rural Fire Control. According to the criminal complaint, Gary A. Kieper, 69, stole $242,684.26 from the Town of Ackley from 2013 to 2023, and $80,458.02 from Rural Fire Control from 2017 to 2023.
