No clutch hitting this time, as Typhoon falls at Wisconsin Rapids

WISCONSIN — The Antigo American Legion Post 3 baseball team had plenty of momentum heading into Tuesday’s Wisconsin Valley Legion League game at Wisconsin Rapids.

A night after the Typhoon used timely hitting to plate 13 runs in a romp over Rhinelander, Antigo struggled with ducks on the pond in a 9-3 defeat, falling to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in Valley Legion play.

“We had issues with situational hitting with runners in scoring position,” head coach Alex Heiny said. “Left too many on base.”

The Typhoon stranded six, but had several runners gunned down, including a back-breaking double play in the fifth that wiped out a one-out scoring threat.

Antigo plated all three of its runs in the fifth, but it was too little, too late, as Wisconsin Rapids held a 9-0 advantage entering the frame. It was the struggles of Rapids’ relief pitcher Trevor Linzmeier that greatly aided Antigo’s scoring. Linzmeier loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter, and then issued three more free passes, coming in consecutive order to Wyatt Krause, Kaden Novak and Gunnar Roth to send three runners home.

Linzmeier closed the door from there, getting Tarras to ground out to end the inning, before allowing a lead off walk in the seventh, but another double play ended Antigo’s threat.

Brett Simonsen worked five shutout innings for the home team, allowing just four hits, while walking three and striking out five.

Ben Robrecht took the loss for Antigo, allowing nine runs, five earned on eight hits over four innings of work. He walked three and struck out three. Gordon Lucht and Javon Bussey both pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Rapids was able to build its lead thanks in part to some struggles from an Antigo defense that committed three crucial errors, along with several passed balls. The Rangers scored two runs in the bottom half of the first, aided by an Antigo throwing error, and another four in the second which came on just two base hits. A pair of walks, two passed balls, another throwing error, a triple from Braden Lewis and a Simonsen single did the damage as Wisconsin Rapids built a 6-0 lead after two innings of play.

“Rapids took advantage of the extra outs we game them early in the game,” Heiny noted.

The Rangers tacked on one run in the fourth, as Trevor Martin blasted a one-out triple and scored on a passed ball, The third Antigo error of the night and an RBI single from Lewis accounted for the remaining two Rapids’ runs on the night.

Lewis led the Rangers’ lineup with three hits, while driving in a pair. Kaleb Ellis and Gage Honeyager both recorded two base knocks, including a double from Honeyager.

Tarras recorded two of Antigo’s four hits, with Mason Gray and Gunnar Roth adding the remaining two. It was a notable base knock for Roth, the initial hit of his Legion career for the first-year player.

Alec Knapkavage did reach base three times, courtesy of a trio of free passes.

Next up for the Typhoon is its home opener on Thursday, as it welcomes Wausau to town for more Valley League play. Thursday’s start time is 8 p.m. from Kretz Brothers Park.
