ANTIGO — The Antigo Police Department took a man into custody Tuesday night at approximately 6:42 p.m. following a standoff nearby the Langlade County Safety Building.

Antigo Police Chief Dan Duley has not released information about the man’s identity, but confirmed he was an Antigo resident and was wanted on a warrant after having been involved in a domestic dispute the previous night.

Duley said that on Tuesday night, the owners of a separate residence in the city called police around 5:54 p.m. reporting that the same man had appeared there and threatened them with a gun.

Duley said a county deputy located the vehicle and was behind it. The vehicle then backed up and hit the deputy’s squad at an intersection.

“A short pursuit occurred of the suspect and during that pursuit, at the intersection of Dorr and 3rd, the suspect struck one of our squad cars, the city squad car, and at that point there was a short standoff,” Duley said. “The individual was not cooperating and not following commands. Then he ended up driving away from that location a short distance, where a further standoff occurred.”

The second standoff occurred in the parking lot of Wagner Oil, where multiple police and sheriff’s vehicles, including an armored vehicle operated by the joint sheriff’s office and police department special response team, were seen along Edison Street and in the Wagner Oil parking lot along with the suspect’s vehicle.

Duley said law enforcement officers shot out the windows of the suspect’s vehicle with bean bag rounds and also employed pepper ball rounds during the confrontation.

“The armored vehicle, the BearCat, was used for cover and for the safety of the officers and deputies,” he said. “There was obviously some dialogue back and forth between the officers and deputies and the subject and some less than lethal munitions were used and eventually he complied and exited the vehicle and was taken into custody.”

As the Antigo Journal arrived Tuesday night, police were physically transporting the man, who was restrained and at times shouting, into the safety building.

Duley declined to comment on the nature of the domestic dispute that occurred Monday. As for the harrowing string of events Tuesday, he said no one was injured at the home the suspect entered with a gun, but that one officer did later sustain minor injuries.

“We have one officer that was seen at the hospital for some injuries and was released,” Duley said, though he confirmed that the man never fired his weapon during the standoffs. “I don’t know about injuries to the suspect at this point.”

Duley credited law enforcement personnel that participated in Tuesday’s standoff.

“The officers handled it in a very professional and appropriate manner,” he said. “Given the circumstances and the dangerousness of the situation, they did the job that they are trained to do how they’re trained to do it and got people taken into custody without people being hurt.”

Duley said the suspect has not yet been formally charged.
