Top-30 recruit Hudson Greer sets three official visits, updates recruitment
By SAM LANCE & CHARLIE PARENT NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — Hudson Greer, a top-30 recruit in the class of 2025, has set visits to Alabama (Sept. 6), Arizona (Oct. 4) and UConn (Oct. 11), he told ZAGSBLOG at Nike EYBL’s Peach Jam this past week. The 6-foot-6 guard averaged 14.3 points and 6.1 rebounds across seven games with JL3 Elite AAU. He’s also had a busy summer aside from AAU, attending the Jayson Tatum Camp (his favorite player), Team USA Camps and transferring to coveted Montverde Academy. “Just learning from him [Tatum] and the way he’s able to create with the ball was great,” he told ZAGSBLOG in an exclusive interview. On the recruiting front, Creighton, Arizona, Texas, UConn, Duke and Alabama are pursuing Greer the hardest, though Duke and UConn have yet to offer. Greer, a childhood Duke fan, had a look into Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer’s mantra as he was the head man of Team USA Camp. “Oh for sure [it strengthened our relationship],” Greer said. “I feel like I learned a lot from that. Just learning how to make straight line drives, being able to create for myself or my teammates and being effective on every end of the floor.” He has taken unofficial visits to Arizona and Creighton, and is at Texas ‘all the time’ as it is close to home. Greer previewed his upcoming Alabama, Arizona and UConn officials, while breaking down his other options as well: Alabama: “Coach [Nate] Oats and coach [Ryan] Pannone came to one of my practices and sat down with me for an hour and said ‘this is how we’re going to use you in our NBA style offense,’ which I really liked. They’re an NBA style kind of team and watching them play you can see that, whether it’s a three, floater or layup, there’s nothing in between. They showed me shot chart after shot chart and they have some games where they don’t shoot a single mid-range. I really liked that because I don’t shoot a lot of mid-ranges either, it’s either a three or a drive to the basket to get some free-throws.” Arizona: “With coach [Tommy] Lloyd, he was obviously the head coach at Team USA. Even though I didn’t make the team, it was great to see him and get his vibe. On the court, he likes the dawgs, but off the court, everyone at Arizona is classy, so there’s really good guys there. When I was on my unofficial there, I was with [2024 five-star signee] Carter Bryant the whole time. I got a good feel for the campus with them, I went to the Red & Blue game, and it was an awesome time.” Creighton: “Coach [Greg] McDermott is a great guy. I had a little bit of a slump shooting in Indianapolis, and he called me and said ‘keep shooting, don’t lack confidence in that. He liked to comapre me to Baylor Scheiremann and I like that comparson, but I think I’m a little more athletic. Other than that, it’s just continuing to shoot because Baylor had games where he shot 2-for-10 and other where he would be 7-for-9, so it’s just continuing to shoot because if you’re on the court and don’t have confidence, you don’t really have anything out there.” Duke: “Growing up I was a big Duke fan with Coach K. With them, I really liked Christian Laettner and loved his documentary a lot. It’s a great school, great campus and great feel, but until I get that offer it’s just another school for now.” “It’s historic, the brotherhood speaks for itself. They do a really great job there, whether it’s recruiting, or just bringing guys together. I have no worries about Duke this year, I think they’re going to play together and be very good. I think he [Scheyer] gets a really good group every year and gets them to play together, which I really like.” Texas: “It’s close to home and a great campus downtown. Being there so often, whether with [Chris] Beard there, or Rodney Terry, who’s doing a great job there. With them, they like to push the ball and use their athletes, which I really like, I think I can be one of those guys: getting up-and-down the floor, cutting and spacing.” UConn: “When I went to USA Camp in April, we watched the Final Four games and I found myself just watching Coach [Danny] Hurley coaching. He’s a fun guy to watch and very energetic on the basketball court. With him, he’s that coach you really want behind your back because you know he’s going to be there for you. I think one of the best things with him is how hard his practices are, from what I’ve seen, and him being a great guy as well.” While he prepares for the college game, Greer will also have to get ready for a new level of high school basketball with Kevin Boyle and Montverde Academy. “Me going to Monteverde, I feel like that was the best thing for me,” he said. “Just hearing the talks about how hard his practices are, how much of an amazing coach he is, and playing his guys in winning positions.” “For instance, Liam McNeeley with UConn,” he concluded. “I could see myself filling that role for them, being a great shooter and underrated passer.” Follow Charlie on Twitter Follow Adam Zagoria on Twitter Follow ZAGSBLOGHoops on Instagram And Like ZAGS on Facebook.
